The Godfathers of Gloves
A good pair of gloves is a real treat and once you have gone down the route of a fine suede or leather pair, compromising for anything less feels like a sacrifice. Sometimes it is the absence of the little things that make us feel most deprived!
Over the last few months, Budd has shaken hands with well-loved, Italian glove maker, Merola. A family run business, the Rome based firm has been hand stitching its gloves from its workshop in Naples for four generations. Today the company produces just 30,000 pairs of hand-made gloves each year, distributing them to a limited number of retailers worldwide.
Alberto Merola, together with his children Stefano and Claudia oversee a team of 59 artisans, all trained in the art of glove making. Whilst gloves may seem like a small consideration, six pairs of hands are involved in the cutting, stitching and sculpting of each pair.
Merola has an innovative design department and the ability to work together with customers to create their perfect glove. It also has a substantial and inspiring archive, allowing for the adoption of core details combined with a twist. What’s not to love?
