We have stocked Simon Drew illustrated braces and ties at Budd for some time and they are much loved by many of you.  Particular favourites are the Trust me I’m a Ducktor and Tall Duck and Handsome and There He Stood designs.  The comical illustrations of animals in humorous situations add a quirky accompaniment to our accessories offering.

We thought it would be interesting to find out more about Simon and his work.

How long have you been working as an illustrator?

Simon Drew (SD): I`ve been working as an illustrator for 31 years, all that time in my own gallery in Dartmouth.

Did you train at art college or are you self taught?

SD: I suppose you`d say I was self taught as an artist as I studied zoology at Exeter University and my degree is in that. However I`ve always drawn and knew pretty well that that was what I was going to do. After teaching for 5 years I leapt from one rut into a nicer one.

Have you always had this particular illustration style, or is it something that has developed over time?

SD: My style hasn`t seemed to change to me, but I think others would think that it has developed as time has gone on.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

SD: My inspiration comes from Herge (Tintin), Patrick Caulfield, Francis Bacon, Tom Lehrer, Randy Newman, every member of the public I eavesdrop on, the TV, the natural world. Pretty much everywhere really.
