Black Tie Guide
A dinner suit (or “tuxedo” as it is known in America) is worn for occasions where “black tie” is required. Made from black barathea or wool/mohair, a single breasted dinner suit is pure elegance. Complete with appropriate shirt and accessories, black tie attire is a refined and a timeless classic style. Facing on the coat should be silk whilst trousers should feature a single line of braid down the outside leg.
What you need:
A White Shirt: White/Cream Dress Shirt, choose from Marcella, voile hand pleat, plain silk, fly-front, silk pleated, and wing collar Marcella as well as hand pleated dress shirts.
Bow Tie: It is traditional to wear a self-tie, black bow tie. Our collection of black bow ties includes satin, faille and barathea silk.
Cummerbund: Black pleated cummerbunds are ideal for black tie occasions, cummerbunds conceal the tucked in shirt in the trousers, ensuring a crisp and elegant appearance, minimising any possible gaping of the shirt. Available in satin, faille, barathea and moire silk.
Waistcoat: A great alternative to the cummerbund. At Budd we offer black satin, faille, and moire waistcoats specifically for black tie affairs. Our waistcoats are cut low at the front so that the studs on the dress shirt can be seen, creating a pleasing appearance.
Braces: Trousers should be held up either by strap and buckle fastenings or braces, keeping them simple in either black or white moire silk.
Scarf and gloves: Both are optional. You may wear them with an overcoat and remove them (along with the overcoat obviously) when you arrive at the venue. We provide white gloves in leather and cotton, suitable for white tie. Our dress scarves come in either black or white and woven and knitted silk qualities. This is the perfect way to finish off the outfit.
Footwear: Black ¾ hose (knee length) silk socks should be worn with your dinner suit. These should be accompanied by either a simple pump or a plain black Oxford shoe with a classic or patent finish.
Pocket Square: A cream silk pocket square is a must. Leave your plain colourful or patterned hanks at home on this occasion to ensure the most refined look.
Shirt Studs & Cufflinks: Studs and cufflinks in black or gold with mother of pearl are ideal for black tie. We carry a wide selection of black onyx, mother of pearl, enamel and precious stone studs at Budd that will do just the trick. Dress shirts are usually worn with two or three studs. The number of studs opted for is dependent on whether you are wearing a cummerbund, waistcoat or plain trouser waistband.
